Q. What is the best size autoclave for my clinic? A. When sterilizing small unwrapped items a cassette style or small 7-9 in. X15 in. chamber will do. For packs and large unwrapped speculems a larger facility with a heavy work load consisting of combitations of packs and cloth wraps 18 in. X 25 in. chamber should be considered. NOTE: (optimum steam circulation and penetration is best, do NOT overstuff or sterilization will be compromised.) Q. How many years should a table top autoclave last? A. Major manufactures all agree on 8- 12 years depending on moderate to heavy use; heaters and power supply tend to go out within 10 years. Q. Which type of autoclave is more cost effective? The automatics or the manual version? A. Depending on how much employee turnover you have in the clinic and how busy the practice. The utomatic performs better in a busy setting and would be cost effective when maintained properly. The manual unit is more user intensive, requiring filling and some cases venting. Q.Should I buy a new autoclave or a used autoclave? A. If you buy a used it's a good idea to get the longest warranty you can get (don't get stuck with a rust busket)!
